President's Message
Dear Members,
It has been a long year. The first half of the year flew by but then the piano fell on us. There are many staff changes going on, and new administrators in certain buildings should make for an interesting start next year. We need all members to update their membership profile on the NJEA website. The first page will ask you if you have any changes. Please make sure your home email is updated. Negotiations continue and the team is scheduled for three more meetings in the month of June.
Good-bye and good luck to all those who will not be back next year.
Thank you,
Paul VanHouten
MTEA President

Changes to Highly Qualified Requirements
There has been a change to the highly qualified requirements for 5th general education and special education teachers. Effective immediately, all 5th grade teachers may meet highly qualified teacher requirements as elementary generalists, whether 5th grade is self-contained or departmentalized. Also, it can be housed in either an elementary or middle school. Those teachers who have already achieved highly qualified status to teach grade five maintain that status. More

The National Education Association Representative Assembly (RA) is NEA's highest decision-making body. With over 9,000 delegates, it is also the world's largest democratic, deliberative body. The RA is convened every July during the Annual Meeting. The first two days are devoted to discussions, conferences, and exhibits-but the highlight is the Representative Assembly itself. During this important event, delegates debate issues that impact American public education, elect top officers, and set policy for the 3.2 million-member Association. Based on our local’s membership, we are entitled to 3 delegates.

In Our Schools... Honor Flight
Williamstown High School¹s 2nd annual Honor Flight traveled to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, June 6th. Sixty-four World War II veterans representing the various branches of military including the Merchant Marines, Marines, Air Corps, Air Force, Navy, Army, just to name a few, their guardians, and
the JR AFROTC Honor Guard to visit the WWII Memorial.
Many veterans were stopped by complete strangers, thanked, and congratulated for their bravery for their service to our country. After traveling to the World War II Museum, followed by a stop to the Lincoln, Korean War, andVietnam War Memorials, then we proceeded past the Pentagon and Air Force
Memorial to the Iwo Jima Memorial. While there, Mr. Al Bailey, the Eastern Regional Coordinator from the National Honor Flight Network retold the stories of the battles leading up to and signaling the turning point in the end of the war.
The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. The HFN transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation ‹and as a culturally diverse, free society. Now, with over one thousand World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out. Thank you to all our local businesses which provided support through donations of money and supplies. Thank you to the student body, teachers and staff of WHS without whom, we would not be able to accomplish the task of transporting our veterans to Washington, DC.
 Williamstown Middle School Blood Drive
Thank you all so much for participating in the MTEA’s first blood drive!
We had a great turnout and collected 35 units! It was wonderful to see so many of you giving up your time for such a good cause. 9 out of every 10 people will need donated blood at some point in their lives and many transfusions require 3 or more pints per procedure. The need for blood never goes away, but you have all helped maintain the current blood supply!
We fell a bit shy of our goal (40 units) but I’m thrilled we came that close! It was quite an interesting day, here are some of the noteworthy tidbits:
-Susan’s donation brought her up to 2 gallons!!
-6 of you were first-time donors (showing a lot of courage I might add!)
-4 people participated in the Double Red Cell donation
Many of you hadn’t donated in a long time, thanks for trying again!
-We were 87.5% to goal (ranked 129 of 350)
-We collected 35 units (ranked 194 of 350)
-We only had one fainter!
You will be eligible to donate again on August 7th (Double Red Cell donors will be eligible on October 2nd)
Thank you again, enjoy your summer!
